BUILDING A MODERN CAMPUS
Founded in 1975, Microsoft Corporation is a technology company that develops, licenses, and supports a range of software products, services, and devices. Microsoft employs 144,000 people, 53,000 of whom work out of their Redmond Campus.
In late 2017, Microsoft announced a plan to redevelop their Redmond Campus. The project will take 5-7 years to complete, with a goal “to build a campus for the future”, transforming how people work, create, and innovate. The technology-fueled, multi-phase project will make room for 8,000 more employees, and create an environment that supports collaboration and community. The end result will be 17 new buildings, 6.7 million square feet of renovated workspace, and $150 million in transportation infrastructure improvements – alongside new public spaces and sports fields. Microsoft currently has 125 buildings on its campus, and once the project is complete this will increase to 131 buildings.
In order to support these plans, they needed a robust tool to provide a holistic view of all their program and project management requirements. As an example, each building represents a project – but there are interdependencies across projects – such as coordinated demolition. Microsoft wanted to ensure the tool they selected enabled them to seamlessly align their development activities across timelines and budgets. Additionally, their project management was being outsourced, and they knew it was time to bring everything back in-house.
